Overview
Galerieplus is the digital exhibition platform of the Gmünder Kunstverein. This project focused on presenting the work of artist Neumann in an online gallery format — extending the physical Kunstverein space into an accessible, digital venue for the 2022 exhibition season.
REFLECTIONS
The project reinforced that the best digital gallery work is invisible — when the interface disappears and only the art remains, the design has done its job. The institutional context (Kunstverein, artist name, exhibition title) needs just enough presence to anchor the work without competing with it.
One ongoing learning: loading performance for high-res images in a gallery context is a UX problem as much as a technical one. Visitors expect near-instant rendering, and a slow load breaks the contemplative mood the design is otherwise trying to create.
Challenge
Art institutions face a recurring tension online: their digital presence tends to either over-design (burying the work under UI) or under-design (presenting art as a mere archive). The goal here was to create a digital exhibition that respects the primacy of the artwork while remaining navigable and discoverable for a general audience unfamiliar with the Kunstverein or the artist.
